Once upon a time in Santa Cruz.. . .

lyrics

The Tenants

tales of twelve cities in our rented room. jane, you’re my lady, your heart stays in bloom. we tend our garden, our friends come to find — this land is ours from the inside. we are the tenants, the seasons are our home holy with all things, our feet are all we own & we’re sick of being told move on, this property’s been sold. but it’s all right to live light on the earth — no banker, no landlord, no cop can tell you your rights of birth when you love our family & our home.

walked from ben lomond, hitched to soquel, slept in orchards, seeing santa cruz in the hills, making our home from the inside, finding our way, my jane charge, as we ride.

crossed a dying meadow, concrete plant ahead, sun at our backs, the earth’s in cracks, you said 'you know how they say a bird’s feathers once were scales? one grass blade’s a sword, but you may sleep in a field & first people live by taking & selling, & what then? & you know how people say, this bird’s feathers are for sale?'

in la honda, laid ourselves to sleep, among trunks & stars so deep, making our home, from the inside, finding our way, my jane charge, as we ride.

you know how children pray to the night : if i die before i wake , i pray my soul will fly to join the greater life.

& you said, hold me, & we fell through the branches toward the center of the land.

in blackberry season, i taste your dark heat. they’d stripmine the gold in the soles of your feet. they’d patent your eyes if they could, for how you see this land is ours from the inside. the woods once were virgin, the streams clear & cold when men built the roads here, but that story’s old. jane, you’re my lady of things to unfold: this land is ours from the inside.
