MAZATLAN
mazatlan, silver swan, mirror-mouth south, face in my hands
foam-haired fawn, stucco dawn, melting mermaid, sandcastle man
when our salt praise of blue dolphin waves, navel-to-navel naves,
kiss kisses miss of tired azul
mazatlan, you are in reach when we’re just a beach
entonces, mi marisol
tus pechos iris
cara, caemos, vol
venga, azul y gris
es hora, mi marisol
tus pechos iris
caemos, mi caracol
venga, azul y gris

sea ponies

sea ponies
little sea pony
pussycat wants to ride with you, should i say, til our black turns blue
away, on our waves
little sea pony
pussycat wants to ride with you, far away, where our black is blue
foamy grottos spray
little sea pony, little sea pony
pussycat wants to ride with you, should i say, til our black turns blue
away, on our waves
coral carnaval organs play on the briney bottom
each pearl gleams so dully til brought to the blue breasts of day
little sea pony, little sea ponies in a mazatlán parade
a bubble-starred mantilla in a sea-changed princess’s hair
who cries may i ride with you, may our tide again be fair
blue dolphin curling on blue, like you i am long from air
in silver webs of spiderweeds, our navel nave azul is bare
our whisking whiskers waved, but deep in the sight of sea ponies,
held in their solemn gaze, we slip away — gone, gone
we slip away — gone, gone, we slip away — gone, gone, gone, gone, gone
the ocean knew how i love you, before i knew how
she’s mapped stranger currents that flew you far, silver star
while my casket of gold turned blue,
little sea ponies, with your manes foamy, ride my scarlet dawn parade
silver stolen eye-pearls, do you leave me encased in coral
beneath these seaweed memories, shifting sand boundaries
might i be free to just be the way a sea pony sees
far off in night, far out of sight,
might hold you tight
on, on, on on on
a sea pony
little sea pony
pussycat wants to ride with you, should i say, til our black turns blue
away, on our waves
little sea pony, little sea pony

faith

|

faith
faith, you give me hope
though i may not be still with you long, in my agitation love’s strong
upper galilee is cold
all in this late november evening, to jerusalem, bus weaving
i’m dressed in a schoolboy’s coat
and now my belly’s full with hunger, but i play a stainless guitar
and i know my place is near
it’s only fair that i can’t see, if on a wing i am flown near
and faith, i smell you near and you are calm, and i say slowly,
oh faith,
kiss me like blind fingers read it
feel my heart beat, please don’t bleed it
though you need me to be holy
heal me with your touch, i call you beautiful, beautiful!
heads turn,
we let them, faith!
for this is beautiful, beautiful!
i can be calm, now i’m with you!
and this is beautiful
you speak slowly
faith, cherish my hope
and hold me the length of judea, with her tawny hills and apple
let’s eat bread, if there’s no wine
when we arrive in the old city, with her saints collapsed in corners
worn as hollow as the stones
and ancient steps but children run on them, and no fear can blunt our wonder
as they hold their colored coats
their parents wove for them to take off, like i feel you in the morning, faith,
i dream and you are real
you stand before me — are you naked?
i can’t see you, yet i feel you
and i’m shivering til we touch
this is the nature of the air here, facing east to the skull mountains
are you with me, feel me blush

simple equation

simple equation
ama ocean cup, swim and let me brim you up
rave your navel poetry,
we need not speak of knowing, just wanting
you & me & we to be
where our love’s such a wondrous affair
our fair’s such a fine sail to sea
where we stretch our tightrope, flying our hope,
dolphin, sea-lion, sea-circus, circle me
every child knows, we are went for ecstasy
kissing past all poetry
we are ours for the asking, just basking
on the beach, and now we reach
where our love’s such a wondrous affair
our fair’s such a fine place to be
giving sight to our flight, hold our rope tight,
rave your navel sea-circus, circle me
ama, ask me, are you fond of equations
like my flower = your sea
woman, tell me, we’re that simple equation
that we work out for today
we work out today.
all right!
(cavalcade)
a simple equation!
ama smiling sea, we are went for ecstasy. . .
a simple equation my darling = my darling darling = my darling =
my darling darling
that we work out today
darling darling
(on the beach in reach, today)

basilicas

basilicas
castella bluenaves, are we playing by the sea easy-free
over the waves do i hear you speak to me? speak to me!
when i speak it’s of the night
in building faces of pale wedding cake
basilicas where the lamb is always slaughtered
font, moisten my forehead with centuries,
my throat’s choked, where’s water? who am i to say
let me help find your stolen friend
who shut your blinds when you were ten
when they lay his liver in the road
beneath the boots of the column of ghosts
your sniper keeps us in his sights
they trained him too well in sniper school
he keeps shooting ghosts back to life.
castella bluenaves, we are laying by the sea easy-free
over the waves i hear you say, speak to me — speak to me!
speak to me deep in the night
of building faces of pale wedding cake
basilicas where the lamb is always slaughtered
font, moisten my forehead with centuries,
my throat’s choked, where’s water? who am i to say
how do we snore so wide awake?
but we’ve pulled this flag out of our hearts
where the hero’s still staked in the tide
the dead anchorman tells you, he’s still alive!
your sniper keeps us up all night
but we’ve found out, he’s no terrorist
he’s just shooting us another wish
as we embrace among the drowning fish.

i tell myself

i tell myself
i tell myself you’re close
why not fly the high of my
having arrived
i know
that sense of humor cries
don’t you pass me by
i’m not the one who slowed
your slower
paper, scissors, stone, and i
know, why not,
you’re close
i’m convinced
as i turn soft as steel
in your power
my lost found flower.

windy breathe

windybreathe
(in honor of Bob Enevoldsen)
my little mushroom, so eager to bloom, you’ve got all our frightened neighbors rushing into
the room, on our lawn, crying Mayday Mayday, your devil girl she stings
well, my cauldron is cooking the bones of your king ... to sing an ... unreal ... thing.
windybreathe — as i pull / power burn / out of your canyon, blue fly eyes
you gush to join our friends, to fly / whose love in pine daylight
whose day eats night / eats to consume my magic
so black’s as big / as trust, i find
windybreathe — L.A. needs kissing / as you kiss me it’s / witchy river honey /
pine in foam
i gush to where our friends’ tail lights / pulse red in deadpalm night
i have no home / save for your chrome, on my engine,
as you’re astride, and butterflies & bugs / pour over us, our sea lives... / our sea lives...but how long?
morning’s strung in radiant / sun grin, twisting in the wind
scarred by code of carved career / warm’s shaved body’s stiffening
my eyes touch your forehead, magnify / our brains, locust meat’s out, on the scorched coast
folds, washed in foam, hold me close, as we roll
down the slope, joined at the hope
—she’s not sick! —don’t hold your breath
—she’s not sick! —don’t hold your breath
—she’s not sick! —can you swim under her
—can you swim under her —waves full of dead
—can you swim under her —i... i...
—can you swim under her —i... i...
—turn, look at the land
windybreathe —
drinkstein, the / droll troll calls, here’s a / werewolf toast, girl / howl for the führer as his
blast cars bubble through your black forest bones... and dig the POWER BURN —
ama stripped / to waste cries, digging / her baby out of ... mmm...bricks—sunfire—
draped flags—brighteyes... sing for awhile... and then the MMM—MMM—MMM
i was wrong about everything / barely with you / now, going down
skinned lamb, oh skinned lamb... waterfoul / peace ... breathe ... (and then the
power burn ... and then the windybreathe ... and then the power burn ... windybreathe...)
i can learn your bivalve bursting through the mouth of smoke
to clear our throats, ellipse blue emerald seaswell skies
sax in tide pools, my wave’s at your breasts
i’m glassy now, redswells bivalve breathing
you’re glassy now, windy bivalve breathing
windybreathe
sunset, help me dirty round your curves to our slow
rainbow
pearl
